Independent Living Skills

Independent living skills are the skills and abilities a person needs to function independently as an adult. In this section, you will find programs and services that assist teens and young adults with general life skills, money management, transportation, pregnancy and parenting, advocacy skills, and legal needs in San Diego County.

Parental Stress Hotline

Parents and caregivers with problems related to their children call for support. Trained volunteer counselors who are sympathetic and non-judgmental answer the Parental Stress Line. No problem is too big or too small for a parent to call. We have a translation service so if you, or someone you know, needs a translator don’t hesitate to call.

Vista Hill: Drug Dependency Court

The Vista Hill Dependency Drug Court Program provides adult screenings and referrals to drug and/or alcohol treatment for families that are involved with Child Welfare Services (CWS). Substance Abuse Specialists are stationed at the five Dependency Courts located at County of San Diego Superior Court buildings.

Vista Hill: Incredible Families Program

In collaboration with San Diego County Child Welfare Services (CWS) and Behavioral Health Services – Children, Vista Hill’s Incredible Families Program (IFP) provides parent training curriculum and mental health services to children and their parents.

Vista Hill: Stein Education Center

Stein Education Center (SEC) is a California-certified nonpublic school providing special education services to students between the ages of 5–22 with histories of chronic and severe social, emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges.

Casa de Amparo: Residential Services

Casa Kids, prenatal through 18 years old, who have been traumatized by severe child abuse or neglect, stay at the Casa Kids Campus, a safe and nurturing setting on 11.4 acres of land in San Marcos, California. Each Casa Kid receives comprehensive trauma informed care tailored to their individual physical, social, emotional, developmental, and educational needs, while also ensuring they have as many healthy childhood experiences as possible. Casa de Amparo is licensed to accept ambulatory and non-ambulatory children and those with special healthcare needs. It is the only licensed group home in San Diego County serving pregnant and/or parenting foster youth.

Casa de Amparo: Young Parent Network

The Young Parent Network is designed to address the needs of pregnant and parenting youth through the age of 25, who are struggling with trauma, substance use, or the emotional, financial, and personal demands of being a parent.

Escondido Education COMPACT

Escondido Education COMPACT is a unique and nontraditional (nonprofit public benefit) organization designed to provide support and services for at-risk youth in North San Diego County. COMPACT has been a youth workforce development specialist for over 25 years, providing youth ages 14-21 with work readiness training and linkages to employment. We work with local businesses and industry to provide enriching educational and career exploration for all students who access our programs.

Team Works

Team Works provides San Diego residents two free workshops every month to answer questions related to divorce, child sharing, spousal support and issues related to division of property. Free Workshops are generally scheduled for evening from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm or morning from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

Employee Rights Center

Founded in 1999 the Employee Rights Center has as its mission, offering all San Diego area workers, especially disadvantaged workers without union representation, education and advocacy regarding their workplace issues. It is the only non-profit organization in the area that offers legal services regarding employment and labor law. During 2009 alone, The Center won over $1.5 million in benefits and $250,000 in unpaid wage claims for its clients and has educated thousands of workers about their rights and benefits.
