Independent Living Skills

Independent living skills are the skills and abilities a person needs to function independently as an adult. In this section, you will find programs and services that assist teens and young adults with general life skills, money management, transportation, pregnancy and parenting, advocacy skills, and legal needs in San Diego County.

Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is a 12.4-acre family support, education, recreation, and cultural arts center, made possible by a generous gift by the late philanthropist Mrs. Joan Kroc. The facility is open to members and the general public and serves residents of East San Diego, La Mesa and Lemon Grove with a variety of quality programs for individuals of all ages.

Consumer Center for Health Education and Advocacy

Free help to individuals needing information about how they can obtain health benefits. Provides consumers with information about their health plans and educates them about their rights, including information on the Affordable Care Act (health care reform) and how it affects them. Advocates are available for those who have had their health services denied, reduced, or terminated, or who are unhappy with their health services. Provides investigation of mental health patient’s complaints and is designated by the County of San Diego as a patients’ rights advocate for outpatient mental health services. Free help with Medi-cal eligibility, share of cost, termination or any type of questions.

Jewish Family Services of San Diego: Patient Advocacy Services

Our Patient Advocacy program, in collaboration with Legal Aid Society of San Diego’s Consumer Center for Health Education and Advocacy (CCHEA), was awarded San Diego County’s Behavioral Health Service’s Program of the Year! JFS Patient Advocacy provides support for all inpatient mental health services, while CCHEA provides advocacy for all outpatient mental health services. Together, we are San Diego County’s legally designated “patient advocate.”

Mental Health Systems: Parolee Partnership Program

The Parolee Partnership Program provides 6 months of intensive case management and recovery services to ex-offenders and parolees at risk of continuing their alcohol and/or drug abuse.

Recovery Innovations

Opening its doors in early 2007, Recovery Innovations – California provides peer-led recovery-based services to adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges. Recovery Innovations – California also conducts workshops on mental health recovery principles and practices and how to implement them throughout your organization.

San Diego Youth Services: Family and Youth Partner Program

The Partners Program serves to assist youth up to age 21 with serious emotional disturbances and their families who are currently receiving outpatient mental health treatment. Family and Youth Support Partners work with families who are in need of additional supports and linkage to other services and community resources. Services are provided in both home and clinic settings, whichever is preferred by the family. Services are coordinated with the referring/treating clinician.

Mental Health Systems: North County Center for Change

North County Center for Change is the case management and treatment provider for San Diego’s North County Division Adult Drug Court. We work collaboratively with other members of the Drug Court Team, who include the Judge, court support staff, District Attorney, Public Defender, and law enforcement liaison officers. As the treatment provider on the Drug Court Team, North County Center for Change helps our clients achieve success in living a productive life that is free of criminal activity. Our treatment services offer group and individual counseling, and our case management services provide for mental health, education, employment and community referral needs.
