Overview
The San Diego Center for Children Academy is a nonpublic school - accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) - specializing in helping students who struggle with mental, emotional, and/or behavioral health challenges that have significantly impacted school performance.
Students and Teachers
Each teacher at the Academy is credentialed in special education and the staff-to-student ratio allows for close instruction, direction, and assistance. Most students enrolled have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) that may have any of the following noted:
- Autism
- Emotional disability
- Specific learning disability
- Intellectual disability (mild/moderate)
- Other health impared
Academic Focus
The academy follows the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) curriculum to support students that are on a diploma bound path for high school graduation. Curriculum includes:
- Math
- Science
- Language Arts
- Fine Arts
- Physical Education
- Social Studies
- Foreign Language
- Health
- College Prep Classes (A-G Accredited)
Additional Support
Working with the families and caregivers to ensure skills and strengths are carried through life transitions, the Academy offers the following additional support for students:
- Intensive Reading Improvement Program
- Math Improvement Program
- Behavior support staff/BCBA
- Occupational therapy and classroom sensory modifications
- Speech and language therapy
- Anti-Bullying Program – Heroic Imagination Project
- Positive Behavioral Management curriculum – PeaceBuilders
- Individual and group counseling with an Academy therapist
- Parent Counseling
- Restorative Practices
- Transitions Program for certificate bound high school students
