Child Welfare Services: Extended Foster Care

Extended Foster Care (EFC) provides support to foster care youth up to their 21st birthday. This provides foster youth with an opportunity to have increased responsibilities and independence, which will help prepare them for self sufficiency.

Services:

Education and career planning, independent living skills, transition goal-setting, case management, extended foster care benefits

Payment Options:

No cost, though the youth must be in the foster care system to qualify.

Eligibility:

The foster youth must be 1) Completing high school or an equivalent program, 2) Enrolling in college, community college or a trade program or employed at least 80 hours a month or participating in a program or activity designed to improve job skills 3) Must meet with EFC social worker at least once a month. If unable to complete requirements due to a medical condition, the foster youth 1) Must live in either the home of a relative, non-related extended family member or legal guardian, a licensed or approved foster home, Foster Family Agency (FFA) certified home, or Intensive Treatment Foster Care home (ITFC), a Supervised Independent Living Program (SILP) or a group home.
